* In Memory of Lawrence "Sonny" Wimberly (1937-1991)
return to main
Mississippi Heat features Chicago blues stars dedicated to safeguarding and promoting traditional blues. The originality of the group lies in its attempt to deliver a unique group sound rather than to highlight a specific artist. The band displays a dynamic force, as is exemplified in the eleven original songs on this recording.

Founded in January of 1992 by Pierre Lacocque, and led by him on the harmonica, MIssissippi Heat preserves the post-war traditional blues sound that Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Howlin' Wolf, and JImmy Reed forged in the early 1950's.

Pierre's musical career began in Chicago 23 years ago, at Theresa's Lounge, playing as a guest with Jr. Wells, Sammy Lawhorn, and Phil Guy. He played for many years in Montreal, Canada, where he won the first prize award at the MOntreal Battle of the Bands in 1975. He reemerged on the Chicago scene a few years ago and soon became known as a powerful, sensitive, and innovative harmonica player. Lawrence "Sonny" Wimberly, formerly with the Muddy Waters Blues Band, is credited for relaunching him in Chicago. "Heartbroken" in a trubute to this great blues man.

Singer-drummer Robert Covington has played the blues for 31 years and has been with Sunnyland Slim for the past 10 years. A charismatic performer, he is one of the most celebrated blues artists in Chicago today. He recorded his own album entitled Robert "Golden Voice" Covington on Red Beans Records in 1988.

Bob Stroger's talent on the bass has earned him worldwide recognition. A veteran of some 35 years, he has toured the world with Eddie Taylor, Willie Mabon, and Carey Bell. He has also recorded with Memphis Slim, Sunnyland Slim, Otis Rush, and Jimmy Rogers among many others.
Guitarist Billy Flynn is another veteran of some 25 years. He displays rare culture and versatility, as can be seen in his four original songs on this recording. His many recordings include a recent release, Leavin' in the Mrning (1992) on Easy Baby. He played for many years with the Legendary Blues Band and with Jimmy Dawkins, among others.

James Wheeler has played the guitar for 30 years. He has performed with Otis Rush for the past 6 years, and has accompanied great blues artists such as Otis Clay and Willie Mabon. He is a deep, sensitive, and inspired musician.

Calvin Jones and Sam Lay are guest stars who have performed several times with Mississippi Heat. Both are living legends! Calvin needs no introduction as he ios famous for his outstanding bass playing with Muddy Waters for nearly two decades. Here he sings a song about his wife Ruby Mae Jones.

Sam Lay, the Shuffle Master, plays drums like no other. Recently inducted in the Jazz and Blues Hall of Fame for his contribution to the blues, he has played with such legends as Howlin' Wolf, Paul Butterfield, and Bob Dylan, to name only a few.
